Nanjing University Delegation Visits the United States

From November 5 to 10, 2023, Wang Zhenlin, Vice President of Nanjing University, led a delegation to Washington D.C., Baltimore, and New York. The delegation visited Johns Hopkins University, the School of Advanced Studies in International Studies (SAIS), and the United Nations Headquarters in New York, among others. During this visit, the delegation carried out academic exchanges, visited with friendly people, and held a conference for the exchange of talent development at Nanjing University, as well as met with representatives of the American Nanjing University Education Foundation and local alumni, to expand our educational exchange and cooperation with the United States.

On the morning of November 6, Wang Zhenlin and other members of the delegation had in-depth exchanges with James Steinberg, the Dean of SAIS. Both sides expressed that they would jointly promote the linkage between the Hopkins Nanjing Center and SAIS Washington Campus and European Campus, jointly carry out interdisciplinary research, strengthen cooperation with all sectors of society, and continuously improve the international influence and academic impact of the Hopkins Nanjing Center.

       On the morning of November 7, Wang Zhenlin and other members of the delegation had thorough exchanges with President Ronald Daniels and Provost Ray Jayawardhana of the Johns Hopkins University. President Daniels spoke highly of the years of partnership between Nanjing University and Johns Hopkins University, then introduced Johns Hopkins University's new developments, strategies, and key research areas. Both sides hope to jointly carry out interdisciplinary research, continuously expand the areas of cooperation between the two universities, and promote the exchange of faculty and students between the two universities.

       Hong Yinxing, Senior Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences, gave two academic lectures at SAIS and New York respectively, discussing "Chinese Modernization and the Road to Openness", disseminating the academic achievements of Nanjing University, and conveying China's ideas on governance. The entire venue was well attended, and the response was enthusiastic.

        The delegation organized three alumni events in Washington and New York, and a special Talent Development Seminar in New York to promote the recent development and talent policy of the university.

The delegation called on Zhang Yun, Education Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., Jill McGovern, wife of former President of Johns Hopkins University, founder and member of the Board of Governors of the Hopkins Nanjing Center, Steven Mueller, and John Lipsky, former Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Hopkins Nanjing Center.

As a pioneer of mainland China universities visiting the U.S. after the epidemic, the Nanjing University delegation's visit enhanced its close partnership with Johns Hopkins University, contacted alumni feelings, and was an ice-breaking, heart-warming trip. Representatives from Hopkins Nanjing Center and the Business School of Nanjing University accompanied the delegation.
