On December 15, 2023, Jim Steinberg, Dean of the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University, and former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, visited the Johns Hopkins-Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies (HNC). Li Xiaorong, Director of the Center from the Chinese side, Adam K. Webb, Director from the American side, and all members of the Center welcomed Dean Steinberg and his delegation.
During the visit, Dean Steinberg and his delegation toured the Center, attended some of its courses, and presentations of outstanding master's theses, and engaged in deep interactions with the Center's students. Additionally, the Center held an Alumni Homecoming Day event. On the afternoon of the 15th, Dean Steinberg delivered a lecture titled "The Future of China, the United States, and the World Order" at the Center's West Auditorium, addressing faculty, students, alumni, and invited guests.

After the lecture, a reception for alumni was held in the East Hall of the Center, where Dean Steinberg delivered a speech. He noted that the students of the Center have unique experiences and qualities and have built strong friendships with each other. SAIS will continue to promote the integration of the Center into its global campus network and hopes that alumni will stay connected and share their experiences at the Center. The two directors of the Center also expressed their optimistic outlook for the unity and future development of the Center in their speeches. Over 150 alumni from SAIS, the European Center, and domestic institutions returned to the Nanjing University campus, engaging in in-depth exchanges with Dean Steinberg and the faculty and students of the Center, reminiscing about the past years at the Center, discussing future development plans, once again demonstrating the global community cohesion of the Center.

During the visit, Tan Zemin, President of Nanjing University, met with Dean Steinberg and his delegation at the Xianlin Campus, where they engaged in in-depth discussions on the cooperation and future development prospects of the Center. Hong Yinxing, former Secretary of the Party Committee of Nanjing University and a senior professor of humanities, also attended some of the activities.

This visit marks Dean Steinberg's first visit to the Center since assuming the position of Dean of SAIS in 2021. As a collaboration between Nanjing University and Johns Hopkins University, the Center embodies the long-term care and common vision of the two universities and has become a model of international cooperation in higher education. This visit also promotes further dialogue and communication between Nanjing University and Johns Hopkins University, laying a solid foundation for more in-depth and efficient cooperation in the future and actively promoting people-to-people exchanges and cultural communication between China and the United States.
